Authorship / Contributorship Criteria

JOSEIT distinguishes between authorship (who qualifies to be listed as an author) and contributorship (what each person specifically contributed). This page sets out the criteria for both.

Authorship Criteria

To qualify as an author, an individual must meet all four of the following criteria:

1Substantial contributions to the conception, design, acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data
2Drafting the work or critically revising it for important intellectual content
3Final approval of the version to be published
4Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work

Individuals who contributed to the work but do not meet all four criteria (e.g., general supervision, funding acquisition alone, or technical assistance) should be recognized in the Acknowledgments section instead.

Corresponding Author

JOSEIT designates exactly one corresponding author per article
Serves as the primary point of contact with the editorial office throughout submission, review, and publication
Responsible for confirming that all co-authors have approved the final manuscript and agree to its submission
⚠ Authorship by artificial intelligence is not considered acceptable. AI tools do not meet the criteria above and cannot be listed as an author, regardless of their contribution to the manuscript. See the JOSEIT AI Policy for full details.

Contributorship — CRediT Taxonomy

JOSEIT follows the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), a standardized set of 14 roles describing the specific contributions made to a research output. Articles with multiple authors must include a contributorship declaration assigning each author's role(s) from the list below. A contributor may hold more than one role, and not every role needs to be filled.

Conceptualization — ideas, formulation of research goals and aims
Data curation — managing, annotating, and maintaining research data
Formal analysis — statistical, mathematical, or computational analysis of data
Funding acquisition — acquiring financial support for the project
Investigation — conducting the research and data/evidence collection
Methodology — development or design of methodology and models
Project administration — management and coordination of research activity
Resources — provision of study materials, instrumentation, or samples
Software — programming, software development, and algorithm implementation
Supervision — oversight and leadership for research planning and execution
Validation — verification of the overall replication and reproducibility of results
Visualization — preparation and creation of published data visualizations
Writing – original draft — preparation of the initial draft
Writing – review & editing — critical review, commentary, or revision

Changes to Authorship

Any change to the author list — adding, removing, or reordering authors — requires written approval from all authors, including any author being removed. Requests must include a completed authorship change form with signatures and a justification. Changes requested after acceptance will delay publication; changes requested after publication will require a formal correction.
